Find a picture-perfect getaway in Pittsburgh

If you're yearning for a weekend escape, spring's the perfect time to visit the city. Pittsburgh, just a short flight from Albany, has something to offer just about everyone. Not quite the Northeast yet not quite the Midwest, the city is a unique blend of both. It's big enough to offer world-class museums and cultural venues, small enough to make navigating simple, and hip enough to offer some great food. Best of all, it's surprisingly affordable, whether you're planning a couples' getaway or a weekend trip with the kids.

Stelco a risk that could prove rewarding

Now that Dofasco, Algoma and Ipsco are either gone or going, it's time to swallow hard and peek at Stelco. It's not a pretty sight at first glance. But scratch beneath the slag and it gets more interesting.

First hideous sign: A balance sheet that says the company is worthless. Worse than worthless, actually: The book value is a negative $48-million. When Stelco escaped bankruptcy protection a year ago, it underwent a harsh treatment called "fresh-start accounting." When you get a makeover, the smiley "after" picture is supposed to look better than the unhappy "before" shot, but not in this case. The accountants say the company's liabilities are greater than its assets.

The income statement isn't exactly a consolation prize either. For the last nine months of 2006, after it was restructured, the company lost more than $7 a share.
