| Alan English: Times changes put local news first
The Money page becomes the Business page and moves into the A section (it will house a market report, local stocks of interest and a business calendar (including reader-submitted items). Community and political commentary in all media forms are audience favorites. To meet this need, our most dramatic change is the creation of a daily section called Conversations. With your help, we expect to make it a "talker" by stimulating ideas and presenting our communities' many views. It will be where ideas are exchanged. The features: Community and syndicated columnists; Writings from guest columnists and your Community Board members; Your letters to the editor and online forums republished in print; News analysis and follow-up coverage on community issues; Newsmaker Q&As; The Community and Times Editorial Board views; Local contributors and staff "blogging" excerpts.
Older people could get robotic pals (30.03.07)
Older people who want to live in their own homes but still need day-to-day care could be offered virtual friends to give them a helping hand.An expert from York University's Centre for Usable Home Technology has said that the increase in the number of older people across the UK has meant many care homes will not be able to house them all.Instead, the latest technology could be used to ensure that the cleaning is done, dinner is made and older people living alone have plenty to entertain them.Suggestions of the kind of machinery which could be used include everything from motion-activated lights to a robotic friend who could advise and interact with older men and women.Dr Kevin Doughty said that falling birth rates and an ageing population means that the number of people able to look after the older people is falling and will continue to do so.
Matt Sanchez, CEO and co-founder of VideoEgg
The play: VideoEgg powers online video for social networks and then sells ads across those Web sites. For instance, VideoEgg is the technology that lets users on social network Bebo.com upload and share video. VideoEgg counts 70 sites in its network, including 12 of the top 20 social networks, such as myyearbook.com, tagged.com, AOL's Uncut Video and military.com. Through its network, the company reaches 65 million unique users each month across those sites. VideoEgg counts about 20 million video views a day across its network of sites. Mr. Sanchez is looking to strike deals with TV networks and music rights holders to make their videos available across the VideoEgg network. The pitch: While video destination sites such as YouTube and network sites like ABC.com have become homes for Web video, social networks are yet another venue enabling users to publish and pass around video.

Japanese BeatBots Dolls Dance to the Music
This is my new friend Keepon; he has many of the qualities I look for, including great taste in music (seen above dancing to Spoon's "I Turn My Camera On") and the bravado to dance in public. This positively hypnotic robot was created by Marek Michalowski and Hideki Kozima, two researchers currently developing and studying dance-oriented nonverbal play with between children and the robot. Their long-term goal is to develop robots with the sensitivity to synchronize their behavior with human emotions and responses, and thus facilitate comfortable robot/human interactions. For the time being, though, it's just fun to look at. By virtue of its two eye cameras and a nose-mounted microphone, Keepon can "perform emotional and attentional interaction with children"--that is to say, "bust a move" to any music you choose.
